DATUM, the Journal of Architecture at Iowa State University, has announced the release date and launch of DATUM No.8, SEX(Y), and lecture by Aaron Betsky, acclaimed architect, critic, and author of more than a dozen books. Under Editor-in-Chief Liza Walling, Presidents David Cordaro and Preston Mila, and Adviser Ross Exo Adams, this lecture and subsequent launch will take place on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at 7:00pm at the Hohberger Building at 504 E. Locust Street, Des Moines, IA 50309.

DATUM is a journal of A/architecture founded and edited by Design students at Iowa State University. The publication seeks to manifest and catalogue DATUM’s community of discussion and act as a platform for further inquiry and critique. It is organized around a central theme that members feel has been misrepresented, neglected, or needs further examination in the architectural discourse of the midwest.

Our theme for No.8 SEX(Y). This is not a topic that is provocative or political for the sake of being provocative or political. Rather, it is an issue that we are trying normalize to provoke understanding beyond it’s superficiality. The articles and projects within may examine SEX(Y) to determine the relationship of bodies and architecture, explore how gender acts within space, discuss the implications of sex and sexuality in consumer culture, and talk further about sensuality, seductive intent, and ego in what and how we design and build.

Aaron Betsky, lecturer for the evening, is a critic and author of more than a dozen books on art, architecture, and design. Trained at Yale, Betsky has worked as a designer for Frank O. Gehry & Associates and Hodgetts + Fung, taught at SCI-Arc, and served as the director of the 11th Venice International Architecture Biennale. He is currently the dean at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture at Taliesin and Taliesin West. His writings focus on Queer Theory and space and sexuality.

The launch is sponsored by the Iowa State Department of Architecture, Iowa State Design Council, DLR Group (Seattle, WA), Exile Brewery (Des Moines, IA), OPN Architects (Des Moines, IA), Substance Architecture (Des Moines, IA), SVPA Architects (West Des Moines, IA), and Pickard Chilton Architects (New Haven, CT).
